“To say thank you is not enough. The Lyford Cay Foundations and their donors are agents of social change…. We are very grateful for the doors they have opened for young Bahamians.”

'In Their Own Words': Deep Creek Middle School Update

Tuesday June 9th, 2009

The Lyford Cay Foundations are longstanding contributors to the scholarship programme at Deep Creek Middle School (DCMS) in Eleuthera, which promotes academic growth, leadership and responsible citizenship by providing students with a nurturing environment and learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Foundations have given $55,000 to the programme since 2004 and this year plan to make an additional gift of $15,000. (A $15,000 scholarship supports a student at DCMS from 7th - 9th grade at $5,000 a year.) Recently, the principal sent us the following update on the latest developments at the school.

June 8, 2009

Dear Lyford Cay Foundations,

In just two days, the DCMS grade nine class will be graduating. They have achieved remarkable feats this year, from outstanding academic results to organizing a campaign to reduce energy use in the community; from winning gold medals at the All-Island track meet to raising $1,000 to send 16 children to school in Haiti for a year. Since the Foundations have heard from one or more of these students over the course of their DCMS career, we thought you might be interested in learning more about their next steps.

Both Roshandra Thompson and Tyiesha Leary will be going to Preston H. Albury High School in Rock Sound next academic year, where they will continue their journey to be 'The Future Leaders of The Bahamas'. Additionally, Tyiesha is graduating on the honour roll. Many others in the grade nine class will also be attending Preston H. Albury, while six students will be attending boarding school in the United States on scholarships worth more than $184,000:

  • Anyce Butler - Hebron Academy, Maine

  • Waydeisha Sands - Kents Hill, Maine

  • Nicoya Taylor - Episcopal High School, Virginia

  • Curchara Taylor - Garrison Forrest, Maryland

  • Serrano Gibson - Marvelwood, Connecticut

  • Tyler Maxey - The Lawrenceville School, New Jersey

Truly, our investment here in the local communities of South Eleuthera is paying off on a global scale.

I am also excited to announce that we had another successful admissions season and have a strong class of 14 incoming seventh graders. I'm attaching some pictures and information about them. Thank you for your continued support of our programmes — you are helping us give great opportunities to talented young Bahamians.

Warmest regards,

Joanna Paul, Principal
