“I think that part of the scholarship is that you take on an ambassadorial role for The Bahamas. It almost puts it into writing that I need to be aware of what’s going on in The Bahamas, and be aware of how I can come back to contribute to this country, and I feel really proud that I’m able to represent The Bahamas, hopefully in a good light.”

Technical Training and Vocational Scholarships

Lyford Cay Foundation, Inc. awards scholarships valued at US$7,500 per annum each, and five scholarships worth US$10,000 each.

These awards are directed primarily at Bahamians who wish to train or upgrade skills in areas where there is a shortage of well-qualified Bahamians in the work force. The course of study must be a minimum of six months.

Graduation from high school or its equivalent is a prerequisite for consideration, but applicants who do not have a high school diploma may be considered on the basis of other successful experiences that demonstrate their ability to perform satisfactorily at the college level programme of their choice.

The selection criteria are weighted as follows:

Academic merit 35%
Financial need 35%
Caliber of proposed school 10%
Field of study 10%
Candidate’s personal qualities 10%

To determine academic merit, the Screening Committee evaluates numerous factors including a candidate’s high school GPA, local and international test scores (such as BGCSEs), awards and recommendations.

The approved fields of study are agriculture and fisheries; air conditioning and refrigeration; automotive, marine and aviation mechanics; computer service technology; construction and related trades including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry; health care technology; heavy equipment operations; hospitality, tourism, and culinary arts, and machine shop and welding.

The Committee also considers the applicant’s financial resources, the cost of attendance at the proposed college or university, the caliber of the institution and a candidate’s personal qualities, including his or her leadership skills and contribution to the community.

Deadline for applications is May 1 of each year.
