To assist underserved, academically motivated students, reach their full potential.
The Lyford Cay Foundation’s FOCUS programme is the result of extensive research on best practices, including similar programmes targeting underserved children.
FOCUS (Forward, Onward to College Upward to Success) provides its participants with 45 days of programming each year, as well as everything they need to participate in its activities — including uniform T-shirts, meals, transportation and study materials. Through weekend and summer programming, FOCUS helps students overcome the barriers that can stand in the way of education, and sets them on a path to college and career success.
The programme grew out of the Foundation’s experience with scholarships. Year after year, we noted the lack of preparation by the most underserved students in the public school system. While we have shifted the eligibility criteria to financial need, the overwhelming majority of qualified applicants still come from the private school system.
At present, the programme recruits fourth grade students in the north-western public school district of New Providence and follows them through to college. These schools include: Albury Sayle Primary, Gambier Primary, Oakes Field Primary, Stephen Dillet Primary, T.G. Glover Primary and Woodcock Primary. Admission is by application and is recruitment is conducted once per year.
FOCUS currently takes place at The College of The Bahamas Oakes Field Campus. Learning is facilitated by interns who are College of The Bahamas students.
FOCUS will grow one class at a time and will reach full capacity of 400 students in the 2018-2019 school year. The eight-year long, project-based learning curriculum of FOCUS is unique in The Bahamas, and has already had a positive impact on the lives of its students, their families and teachers.
